Grocery-ListWant to lose weight, control your blood glucose level and save money? Use a list. It can be an app on your phone, a pre-printed “check-off” sheet or post-its. Read the nutrition and diabetes information on cdiabetes.com before you complete your list. That way you’ll have more great ideas of what to buy for healthy meals.

5 reasons you should use a food shopping list:

  • Save Money
Look at the food you have in your refrigerator, freezer, pantry and cabinets. Are there any expired items? Toss all old or expired items. Extra food that you won’t eat or expired goods are a waste of money. Next, add the foods or ingredients you need to prepare healthy meals for the week ahead.
  • Avoid Extra Junk Food
Supermarkets are huge. You can find healthy products such as fruits, vegetables and lean protein such as chicken, fish, and nuts. You might also walk down aisles of cookies, salty snacks and candy. Try to stick to your shopping list. You’ll avoid lots of sugar, calories, sodium and fat if you don’t buy those extra items. If it’s not on the list, don’t buy it.
  • Save Time
Are you a busy person? All of us want to save precious time whenever possible. Your shopping list can be used as a “map”. Follow your list and you will get in and out of your favorite supermarket in record time. Doesn’t that sound great?
  • Eat More Healthy Foods
Make sure you include healthy foods on your shopping list. Once you become familiar with where everything is located in your supermarket (produce, dairy, meats, etc), you’ll know where to pick up the healthier items. Write your foods on your shopping list to remind yourself to cook and prepare healthy meals. Now you’re on your way to a better nutrition program. Good for you.
  • Lose Weight and Control Blood Glucose
Do you want to lose weight or control your blood glucose levels? Keep a detailed shopping list so you can buy healthy foods and prepare them in the correct portions. You can control your calories and carbohydrate intake if stick to pre-planned shopping list.
